When do I put my first application of fertilizer down?
![]()
Your lawn does not start taking in nutrients until it comes out of dormancy. When you see Forsythia in bloom (bright yellow shrub), the lawn is out of dormancy and will start taking in nutrients. If applied too soon, your fertilizer just washes away and is not absorbed.

Why don't I get hydranga blooms in the summer?
![]()
The most common reason is that most people cut off the "dead" looking stalks in the spring. These are not dead, so by cutting them off, you are cutting off blooms. Another reason is that we might get a late frost (mid to late May) and the older generation of Hydranga are not frost hardy like the newer varieties (Endless Summer). If you have an older variety like Nikko Blue, you must cover them during frost.

At what height do I mow my lawn?
![]()
Three inches is a good height to mow. If you mow at a shorter length, you are cutting into the "meat" of the grass. It takes a lot of energy to recover, and many times the grass turns brown because it has lost all of its moisture in the recovery. It is also essential to have a sharp mower blade throughout the year, not just during spring.

What time of the year do I plant annuals?
![]()
The best and safest time is Memorial Day. I never plant the Washington Square pots until then. If you can't wait until then, just keep an eye on the weather. If there is a chance of frost, cover with burlap, newspaper, or old sheets - never use plastic.

Why did my bulbs not come up?
![]()
A lot of times the bulbs are old. Tulip bulbs are notorious for this. They almost need to be replanted especially if you use a lot of nitrogen (Miracle grow) in your beds in the summer. A sure sign of this is that the bulb produced green leaves, but no flower. Daffodils usually are not effected by too much nitrogen in the soil.
